Wen Yu Ho

Conductor Wen Yu HoHailing from the sunny island nation of Singapore, Wen Yu Ho (何文誉) is a recent graduate of Yale University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Music (with distinction) and International Studies (with distinction), graduating cum laude. At present, he is primarily a conductor, having led the Jonathan Edwards College Philharmonic from May 2008 to May 2010. During his tenure, he supervised the growth of the ensemble from a small chamber group to a full-sized orchestra, and led the orchestra in works such as Beethoven’s Fifth and Eighth Symphonies, the Trauermarsch from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake Suite. In addition, he has guest conducted the Yale Symphony Orchestra, the Ezra Stiles College Wind Ensemble and the Hwa Chong Junior College Symphonic Band. In March 2010, Wen Yu made his operatic debut with the Opera Theater of Yale College, conducting Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri.

Classically trained as pianist, he holds an ATCL in Solo Piano from Trinity College London, and a Grade 8 in Theory of Music from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Wen Yu has also branched out into jazz, serving as the pianist for a jazz quintet at Yale for three years, as well as obtaining a Grade 5 with Distinction in Jazz Piano from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Besides the piano, he has played the saxophone for over a decade, including a stint in the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band during his compulsory military service, where he had the honour of playing for distinguished world leaders. Recently, Wen Yu has expanded his scope to take in the flute and the clarinet, and hopes to eventually be a woodwind specialist.

Outside of music, he is interested in football (soccer), history, culture, food, languages and travel. At last count, Wen Yu has been to over 30 countries spanning 6 continents, and he is working to add to his store of languages, with Portuguese or Japanese next on his list. Additionally, he was a member of the Yale Quiz Bowl team throughout his 4 years in college, participating in 3 National Academic Quiz Tournaments. Wen Yu is presently employed as a teacher at the Whitby School in Greenwich, CT, where he teaches both Music and Chinese.
